French cosmetics giant Sephora has pulled a lipstick dubbed “Celebutard” amid public criticism from customers, particularly parents of children with mental disabilities.
Offensive make-up line
The offensive lipstick, part of Kat Von D’s makeup line, has sparked controversy across social media last week.
Angry customers and activists from organizations such as Down Syndrome Uprising and All About Developmental Disabilities voiced their disappointment over the insensitive makeup line.
Sephora didn’t respond to angry protesters for several days, but Kat Von D, a model and tattoo artist behind “Celebutard,” reportedly took to Twitter and said, “At the end of the day, it’s just a f**king lipstick” before deleting it.
Online protests
Following angry online posts about mocking the disabled, Sephora decided to pull out the lipstick from its stores and apologized.
“It has come to our attention that the name of one shade of a lipstick we carry has caused offense to some of our clients and others. We are deeply sorry for that, and we have ceased sale of that shade both in our stores and online,” Sephora said in a press statement to CTV News.
